Raffia Basket Knit on a Round Loom

Raffia Basket Knit on a Round Loom

My first effort on the Knifty Knitter round looms was this little basket. It wasn't difficult as long as I was gentle and didn't pull the raffia too forcefully with the hook. I think it would be nice to nestle a little spring flowerpot in it or maybe use it to hold some potpourri or a pillar candle. If you're a patient person, you might even make one of these on the larger round looms to use as a lampshade, making sure it was a safe distance from the heat of the bulb.

WARNING! If you're unfamiliar with knitting looms, the following might not make much sense. Please get yourself a set of looms and visit the loom-knitting sites I have listed on the links page before trying to make heads or tails of what I'm about to describe!

For this project I used the small round Knifty Knitter loom. The Michael's craft store near us sells spools of 80' of raffia ribbon in various colors. I picked up one in sage and one in brown and still have plenty left after completing the basket. The entire project was done with the e-wrap (twisted stockinette) stitch. I found it easiest to wrap and knit off each peg instead of wrapping the entire loom and then knitting off, which made the raffia too tight. On the last row, I moved each odd-numbered loop one peg to the left. I then e-wrapped each peg that had two loops and knit off the bottom two loops over the top loop before continuing on to the next two-loop peg. Finally, I did a gathered bind-off and wove in the ends.

Here's what the Knifty Knitter looms look like, in case you were wondering!

Wow, that is really cool! I should make some GINORMOUS ones to put all of my kids' toys in! I have two. My son will be three in a week and two days and my daughter is 15 months. :D

That would be cool, but I might use something a little stronger than the raffia ribbon. My kids are 10 and 6 and I know the first pokey plastic toy that got crammed in the bottom would make a gigundous hole! It might work for stuffed animals and balls, though.

Love this idea and can think of many uses for a custom colored basket to organize in our apartment. Thanks.
