Homemade Instant Hot Chocolate Mix Recipe

I looked at the ingredients on the store-bought versions and thought that there must be a way to make this stuff myself with ingredients that I can recognize and for less expense. We usually make hot chocolate at home from milk and chocolate syrup, but there are times when an instant version is useful. We always take this on camping trips, and it's great for when you've run out of milk!

  • 3 parts non-fat dry milk powder
  • 2 parts sugar
  • 1 part cocoa powder

I make mine in a quart jar, so the "part" amount I use is 1/2 cup. If I put in the ingredients in the order shown, I don't even have to wash the measuring cup in between. (Not lazy - efficient!) Then just shake it up. I put about three heaping spoonfuls in a mug and add hot water, but play around with the proportions to get the taste you like.
