Ladder Pattern Loom Knit Scarf
This scarf knit up very quickly on the small long Knifty Knitter once I got the wrapping pattern started. I came up with this very simple deviation from the normal double-knit and it gives the scarf a stitch that's both open and interesting. It reminds me of a backbone for some reason, but I'm calling it the "ladder" pattern, since that's a little more attractive.
I love the colors and texture of the Patons Bohemian "Indigo Indulgence" yarn. Its "super bulky" rating meant that I could make a scarf with a nice thickness to it without doing many stitches per row. My old standby method of making a scarf is the double-knit that's described in the Knifty Knitter long loom booklet. The change I made to their pattern is small, but that's all it took to make this scarf very different from the others I've made.- To begin the scarf, tie a slip knot about 12" from the end of the yarn. Place this loop over peg #1.
- With the yarn that leads to the skein, wrap peg #2 counter-clockwise.
- Skip pegs #3 and #4.
- Wrap peg #5 clockwise.
- Wrap peg #6 counter-clockwise.
- Skip pegs #7 and #8.
- Wrap peg #9 clockwise.
- Wrap peg #10 counter-clockwise.
- Now using the long tail (the yarn that's still hanging from #1) do the same wrapping pattern.
- Using your loom hook, pull the bottom loop on each peg over the top loop and the top of the peg to knit the five pegs that have two loops.
- Use the yarn leading to the skein to wrap in the opposite order on the way back to peg #1. You will go counter-clockwise on #9, clockwise on #6, counter-clockwise on #5, clockwise on #2, and counter-clockwise on #1. The "working yarn" will then be coming from the right side of #1 and going up between #2 and #4 (even though my picture shows it off to the left side).
- Knit your five stitches.
- Wrap the pegs as you did on the very first pass, beginning counter-clockwise on #2.
- Knit and wrap. Knit and wrap. Knit and wrap...
- When it's long enough, use the double crochet bind off to remove it from the loom.
- Add fringe if you like.
