Digging to America Audiobook
Two families, one American and one Iranian, meet at the airport on the day that their newly-adopted daughters arrive from Korea. The difference in the groups assembled to meet the girls sets the stage for the rest of the story. The Donaldsons wait at the airport with balloons, badges saying "Mom", "Dad", "Grandma" (times two), and "Grandpa" (times two), many relatives and videocameras. The Yazdans, on the other hand, arrive with only the two expectant parents and a grandmother. The Donaldson party fills up the room, leaving the Yazdans on the outskirts. The families meet, though, and their lives become intertwined as the girls grow up together.
The story shows two viewpoints on the American way, one from people who were born here and one from those who came here and are still trying to find their place. There's insight on adoption, death of a spouse to cancer, learning to date again, multicultural families, and how foreign-born people who have lived in another country end up feeling they don't belong in either country. So many personalities and histories and viewpoints... it was fascinating.
The voices and accents Blair Brown gave the characters were great, too. She really acted out the story for the listener and I looked forward to the times when I could listen to her. I listened to the story on a library Playaway device, but put a link to Amazon's page for it in case you wanted to read more about it.
